iBurst to shut down at midnight

Johannesburg - Internet service provider iBurst will close its doors at midnight on Thursday.

The company, which was founded in 2004, announced its closure and advised customers to contact channel partners on its website.

“The iBurst Wireless Network will officially shut down at midnight on the 31st August 2017. After that date iBurst customers who have not migrated to LTE-A are advised to contact our selection of channel partners,” a notice on the company’s website read.

The site is also offering customers a last chance to purchase LTE-A packages before midnight.

Channel partners for iBurst’s LTE-A include Ignite, MWEB, Web Africa, Crystal Web and Afrihost.

With its headquarters in Bryanston, Johannnesburg, iBurst was part of the Multisource Group, seen as a leading telecommunications provider in southern Africa.

The company was one of the first to offer modems and routers to customers and offered numerous affordable broadband deals, including a 1Mbps line.

Other Multisource companies include XConnect South Africa, WBS Holdings and Broadlink.

In 2016 WBS, which owns iBurst, announced a multi-billion rand investment in a new national "high-speed LTE-A" network as an alternative to fibre networks to bring super-fast broadband to consumers and businesses.

The network is also set to enable 5G technology.
