Cape Town – Local domain registrar Domains.co.za is offering free .xyz domains for Wednesday and Thursday.
The offer ties in to the second anniversary of the top level domain and is limited to five per customer.
"With increasing competition making it nearly impossible for brands to register the .com or .net domains they need, the .xyz domain is now another leading choice for anyone interested in a three-letter, top level domain," said Wayne Diamond, managing director of Domains.co.za.
The .xyz domain forms part of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (Icann) programme to expand the number of domains available on the internet.
While domains like .com, .co.za and .net are well known, new domains such as .xxx, .wine and .like are part of the 500 new domains registered with Icann.
Search giant Google’s parent company Alphabet is registered as abc.xyz. Domains registered under the .xyz domain reached about 1.5 million late in 2015.
"Possibly the biggest benefit of .xyz to the worldwide Internet community is that it enables the kind of fresh creativity in domain name registration that has become increasingly difficult in a cluttered web," said Diamond.
For South Africans who miss the free offer, the price for .xyz domain registration until the end of June is R10.
