Free Freedom Day Wi-Fi data offer launched

Cape Town - South Africans will have access to free Wi-Fi data on Freedom Day, AlwaysOn has announced.

The Wi-Fi provider will drop the requirement to pay for Wi-Fi access at all of its hotspots on Wednesday, subject to a fair use policy.

The company has 1 816 hotspots at restaurants, hotels and airports in SA. In 2014, it partnered with smartphone manufacturer Samsung to provide 2GB of Wi-Fi data.

AlwaysOn also launched Wi-Fi calling which bypasses mobile networks in 2015.

Key enabler

“At AlwaysOn, the focus has always been about pushing the boundaries and trying new things. Sure, things might not always work out how you plan, but nothing worth doing happens in your comfort zone,” said managing director Hayden Lamberti in a statement.

“It is for this very reason that AlwaysOn has decided to push the envelope and attempt what has never been done before in South Africa.”

The free Wi-Fi is also available on the Super Wi-Fi platform which allows faster data transfer, ideal for multimedia content.

“Super WiFi Hotspots will give you the best Wi-Fi experience and are geared up for high definition quality and high volumes of use. With Super Wi-Fi you can watch videos, download apps and do all the cool things that need high speed connection, without draining your personal data,” said AlwaysOn.

Wi-Fi has emerged as a key enabler with major centres rolling out accelerated broadband access in the country.

The department of telecommunications and postal services has allocated R642 764 000 to infrastructure support for broadband penetration estimated at 17% in SA.
