Cellphones make 'ideal' worker training tools

Cape Town - The market penetration of cellphones in South Africa provides an ideal way for companies to train workers, an industry organisation has said.

“With over 40 million unique subscribers, mobile-based learning seems an obvious solution. With the device in the hands of the person to be upskilled, learning can be personalised and the rapid development of cutting edge apps makes this possible,” said edupreneur Arpit Badjatya.

Badjatya has partnered with education technology provider Eiffel Corp and said that e-learning for workers could be personalised to ensure effective training.

“Not all students are suited to traditional university education and technology can supplement the role of institutions, achieving the same goal - an educated population that’s ready for employment,” he said.

South Africa’s official unemployment rate is for the first three months of 2016 stands is 26.7%, a 2% increase on the last quarter of 2015.

Stats SA said that the unemployment rate was well below the 2030 target rate of 6% as set out in the National Development Plan.

Badjatya developed Academia ERP software which is able to courses at institutions of higher learning.

The software, developed in India, is currently in use by 175 tertiary education institutions in developing countries.

“In our experience, although students are the client of the institution, many do not focus on client satisfaction. When developing Academia, we set the student at the centre of the system and asked how best to treat the student as a client. We have focused on functionality, self-service features, feedback and a dedicated portal and app,” said Badjatya, who studied in the US.
