Johannesburg - The Canadian immigration website has crashed as a win for Republican candidate Donald Trump became imminent.
The website for Citizenship and Immigration Canada, www.cic.gc.ca, was reported to have gone down shortly after the US election results began rolling in.
News agency Reuters reported that Canada's main immigration website appeared to suffer repeated outages since Tuesday night as Trump took the lead in several major states and his prospects for winning the US presidency became markedly higher.
It has also been reported that New Zealand immigration officials told Reuters on the eve of the vote that the New Zealand Now website, which deals with residency and student visas, had received 1 593 registrations from United States citizens since Novomber 1 – more than 50% of a typical month’s registrations in just seven days.
The site crash and increased interest in New Zealand immigration may well be a coincidence. However, the word “emigrate” has seen a spike in online search engines.
Meanwhile, the price of bitcoin has surged by as much as 2.6% as Trump edged to a lead over rival Hillary Clinton.
The price of one bitcoin was about R10 033.64 on Wednesday morning.
