Seacom - which operates an undersea broadband cable that connects from South Africa to Europe and Asia - said in an update on its website on Thursday morning that it was "experiencing multiple outages on the terrestrial network across Egypt".

"All our international connectivity through Egypt has been affected since 06:00GMT (08:00 South African time) on the 28th January 2016," said the company.

"Repair teams are on site. Seacom continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide necessary updates," said the company.

UPDATE: Fibre cuts 'located' and repaired

In an update, Seacom said it managed to fix the problem.

"The Seacom terrestrial network was successfully repaired on the 28th January 2016 at 10:08 GMT (12:08 South African time)," said Seacom.

Earlier on Thursday, Seacom said that "both cuts have been located" as the company's teams moved to repair the problem.

"Seacom IP (internet protocol) and MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) customers may experience increased latency as that traffic is re-routed to alternative network paths," said Seacom at the time.

This is the second outage for Seacom in a week. Last week Thursday, Seacom experienced a fibre cut on one of its terrestrial fibre networks in Egypt which briefly led to internet connectivity in South Africa being affected.
