Fibre coming to 12 000 Bryanston homes

Johannesburg - Telkom says 12 000 homes in Bryanston, Johannesburg will have access to fibre broadband by March 2016.

The fixed-line telecommunications company says this would make Bryanston the “largest fibre open access suburb to date”.

Open access means that subscribers can choose their own internet service provider on the Telkom fibre network.

“We are rolling out fibre to all of Bryanston as part of our aggressive push to provide one million homes with fibre access by 2018,” says Telkom managing director of wholesale and networks Alphonzo Samuels in a statement.

“Bryanston will be a model for the country when it comes to connecting entire suburbs to fibre broadband,” says Samuels.

Earlier this month, Telkom announced that it’s connecting 25 more suburbs to its high-speed fibre broadband network by the end of September 2015.

Telkom’s fibre roll-out is happening amid increasing competition from smaller players such as Vumatel, which itself is targeting 100 000 household connections by 2016.

Vumatel is also building its fibre network in Bryanston South.

Meanwhile, Telkom is promising speeds of 100Mbps on its fibre network.
