Johannesburg - More South Africans entered Google searches for slain Bafana Bafana captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa than for disgraced paralympian Oscar Pistorius this year.
This is according to the search giant’s top charts for 2014 which reveal what South Africans predominantly searched for during the year.
Searches for Meyiwa led the overall chart this year in South Africa followed by other topics such as Ebola, the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams, the attention around the Oscar Pistorius trial and the FIFA Football World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
Meyiwa died from a gunshot wound after visiting his girlfriend's home in Vosloorus in October. His death stunned the nation and he received an official provincial funeral.
Meanwhile, the Ebola virus was also top of South Africans’ minds on Google this year. The Ebola outbreak has ravaged West Africa with the death toll in the region this week rising to more than 6 800 people, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Jailed paralympic star Oscar Pistorius ranked fourth in terms of overall Google searches in South Africa this year. But the athlete, who was this year convicted of culpable homicide, ranks second in terms of Google searches for South African people, while his trial also ranked first regarding current affairs.
Firebrand Economic Freedom Front (EFF) leader Julius Malema ranked as South Africa’s most searched politician. Malema lead the pack ahead of South African President Jacob Zuma and the Democratic Alliance’s leader in parliament Mmusi Maimane.
Globally, Robin Williams, the World Cup and Ebola were the three top trending topics.
