Cape Town – Apple’s new iPhones will only officially be available in South Africa from October 9, but that hasn't stopped an enthusiastic fan from buying one already.
E-commerce website bidorbuy announced on Wednesday that an iPhone 6s was sold on its platform for R17 999.
“The buyer, who is from Amanzimtoti, was happy to pay R17 999 for a 128GB Rose Gold model, although there is currently a 64GB Space Grey or Silver model on offer on the site for R15 799. Both of them are available immediately and are not on pre-order,” bidorbuy said in a statement.

Apple announced on Monday that sales of the iPhone 6s hit a record globally.
“Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.
Despite taking only 5% of the South African market, the iPhone is a popular device thanks, in part to its featured role in reality TV shows.
“The fact that an iPhone 6s was sold so quickly after being listed on the site testifies to the appeal of this particular brand. It also signifies that buyers know that they need to come to our marketplace when they want to be among the first to own a coveted product,” said Matthew Avramit bidorbuy’s head of Category Management.
Apple said that the new iPhone will launch in several countries in a staggered roll-out on October 9 and 16.
Meanwhile, Vodacom has confirmed that it will be selling the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus from October 16.
