Cape Town - Intel has showed off its latest devices that the company hopes to keep it relevant as technology becomes increasingly mobile.
At the company's AfricaCom stand this week, Intel has displayed its smart watch by Basis which was acquired for less than $100m.
The watch sports a traditional display, but includes a range of sensors that track health and biometric data. And like major smart wearable devices, the watch can be linked to smartphones to check messages and notifications.
The South African pricing for the device is not clear, but officials told Fin24 that the cost should follow the current US and European pricing of around $199.
It should be available in SA by early 2015 and will face-off against the Samsung Galaxy Gear S, Sony SmartWatch 2 and other devices.

Intel also showed off its two-piece hybrid notebook which will be used as a template for manufacturers to build consumer devices.
The hybrid has a large screen in excess of 25cm (10 inches) and is mated to a thin keyboard. Unlike some other hybrids, there is not flexible joint for the screen, but the company uses magnets to ensure that the two pieces lock together.
