Cape Town – The world greeted Apple’s new iPhone with a yawn according to data from search giant Google.
Apple on Wednesday launched its anticipated iPhone 6s and 6s plus dubbed the “most advanced smartphones in the world” according to CEO Tim Cook.
However, Google Search Trends showed that search requests for “iphone” registered a score of 50. That number is indicative of a score relative to other search results, up to a 100 maximum.
Apple also launched a new, larger screen iPad that supports multitasking. Searches for “ipad” registered just 11.
The search numbers for the launch are in stark contrast to previous years when “iphone” scored 94 on the release of the iPhone 6 in 2014, and 100 in 2012 with the launch of the iPhone 5.
Eastward shift
Google data shows that “ipad” scored its highest ever search score of 34 in March 2012.
But the data also shows that interest for Apple’s gadgets is shifting East.
Singapore led a surge of interest with an iPhone search score of 100, followed by Vietnam (91) and Cambodia (84).
In SA, searches for the iPhone scored 50 and the iPad 15, with Gauteng the top region at 100.
The new Apple devices are powered by the iOS 9 operating system and the company has expanded its mobile payment service, Apple Pay.
