Facebook to show highlights from your past

Cape Town - Facebook on Wednesday announced the roll-out of a memory feature on the giant social network.

"Today we're announcing On This Day, a new way to look back at things you have shared and posts you've been tagged in on Facebook. Only you can see your On This Day page," said Jonathan Gheller, product manager for Facebook.

The feature will display content from the past and Facebook says that the information is private unless you share it.

"Once on the page, you can choose to subscribe to notifications so you'll be alerted when you have memories to look back on. You can also edit and delete old posts, or decide to share your memories with friends," said Gheller.

Daily services are also offered on Wikipedia and a number of applications serve similar content.

However, the Facebook service differentiates from these because it has access to massive amounts of user generated data.

There are about 1.4 billion Facebook subscribers.

According to software engineers Kevin Wilfong and Pamela Vagata, the company processes 600 terabytes of data per day and has a hive of 300 petabytes.

The feature will gradually be rolled out and Facebook has built it to be mobile friendly, in line with the company's pivot to follow its audience.
