Cape Town - An online video purporting to show a death as a result of police brutality has resulted in officers involved being suspended as the video gains in popularity online.
The video, posted to YouTube and other social networking sites, has had over 300 000 views and shows New York police officers attempting to arrest 43-year-old Eric Garner.
Garner can be heard saying "I can't breathe" in the short video.
Reports suggest he died on Thursday as a result of a chokehold used by officers to restrain the man, estimated to weigh about 180kg.
Garner was pinned by five police officers and at least two are shown to be plainclothes officers.
On Saturday, CBS News reported that Reverend Al Sharpton held a rally for Garner with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio calling the death a tragedy and promising a full investigation.
Community anger has focused on officers Daniel Pantaleo and Justin Damico who have been largely blamed for putting the unarmed Garner in the chokehold which is illegal under New York City police procedures.
