Johannesburg - Huawei shifted the smartphone market in Kenya back in 2011 with the Ideos U8150, and now it's done the same at the entry level in South Africa with the Ascend Y220, a smartphone that entered the market at only R450.
But, according to Arthur Goldstuck, the new Ascend P7 shows it has similar intentions at the high end.
It's a superlative phone that boasts two stand-out features: it's a mere 6.5mm thick, making it the slimmest major brand smartphone in the world, and it has an 8 Megapixel front camera, making it in effect the best selfie camera on the market, according to Goldstuck.
Goldstuck says Huawei has revolutionised a few markets.
Within two months of its launch in Kenya in January 2011, with its Ideos - also known as the Google phone - it took the number one spot, killing off Nokia, which has been a dominant smartphone brand across most of Africa until then.
