INFOGRAPHIC: SA ‘competitive’ on entry level broadband pricing

Johannesburg - Entry level broadband prices in South Africa are competitive but the country lags when it comes to average household tariffs, reveals a UK market intelligence company.

Point Topic’s broadband tariff country scorecard ranks South Africa 27 out of 86 countries regarding its entry level broadband tariffs for the first quarter of 2015. Interestingly, South Africa ranks ahead of highly connected South Korea (28) on this scorecard while SA is behind Uruguay at 26.

But SA scores poorly when it comes to average tariffs as the country ranks 68 out of 86 countries. Another African country Tunisia (67) ranks ahead of South Africa in this regard.

Point Topic’s broadband tariff country scorecard compares entry level and average broadband tariffs from over 3 000 residential services from operators in the 86 countries.

Japan, Belarus and Russia are the only countries that appear in the top 10 lists for both entry level tariffs and average tariff rankings, according to Point Topic.

“We monitor the 5 000+ tariffs and services from operators in 90+ countries and check back every three months to track any changes. The tracking is done on a rolling three month cycle which means that, while every service and tariff is not checked on the same date, it will have been checked sometime in the quarter that the report refers to,” Toby French of Point Topic told Fin24.
