Johannesburg - Telecoms company Telkom has moved to disrupt South Africa’s mobile market by simplifying its products and cutting prices.
On July 25, Telkom will allow customers to choose the amount of data they want from “a simple plan, available in six data sizes” as part of its FreeMe offering.
These contracts will be priced as follows: 1GB (R99), 2GB (R149), 5GB: (R299), 10GB (R399), 20GB (R599) and unlimited data (R999).
All of the plans will include free texts, free instant messaging service calls (via the likes of WhatsApp and Viber), free calls to Telkom Mobile and Telkom fixed line numbers, and free Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile, the two top end products - the 20GB and unlimited data services - will include free calls to any network as well, said Telkom.
Vodacom and MTN charge customers up to R150 for 1GB, according to Research ICT Africa.
Telkom has further promised “no hidden costs and no confusing contracts” in its FreeMe offering.
“Telkom FreeMe offers our customers smartphone plans that liberate them from everything they’ve ever hated about their network,” said Telkom Consumer CEO, Attila Vitai.
“Data has become the central requirement for most smartphone users, so that is what we have prioritised”, he said.
Telkom also said that “customers will also be able to complete their FreeMe orders online in just fifteen minutes with next day delivery in metropolitan areas and within two to three days in other areas”.
“Everything will be easier and more affordable in ways that weren’t possible before,” Vitai said.
