Cape Town – South Africa's third largest network Cell C has announced that it will offer Wi-Fi calling on iPhones.
The operator said in a statement that Wi-Fi calling would be available on iPhones from the 5c to the SE and running the latest (iOS 9.3.2) operating system.
While Wi-Fi calling has long been available for Android powered smartphones in SA, the announcement marks the first for an African mobile operator.
The feature is useful for South Africans travelling abroad because they are able to make calls or send SMSes at local rates, Cell C said.
“Once connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot, customers can make and receive calls and messages exactly as though they were in South Africa and at the same rate they would pay as if they were in South Africa. Also unlike international roaming, Wi-Fi Calling does not charge customers for incoming calls,” said Cell C.

Wi-Fi provider AlwaysOn in 2015 offered “platform agnostic” Wi-Fi calling to South Africans through its hotspot network.
Facebook-owned messaging application WhatsApp also offers data calling over mobile or Wi-Fi networks.
Cell C will update its customers with the Wi-Fi calling settings over the next few days, but to do it earlier, go to Settings -> General -> About and follow the prompts.
Cell C is South Africa's third largest mobile network with over 22 million subscribers.
