WhatsApp calling comes to Apple iPhones

Johannesburg - An update to the Apple iOS version of instant messaging service WhatsApp indicates that voice calling capabilities are coming to the app.

WhatsApp, which is owned by social media giant Facebook, pushed an update to its Apple iOS app on Tuesday.

Notes regarding the update detail how a voice calling feature has been switched on for Apple iOS users of WhatsApp on April 21.

“WhatsApp Calling: Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country,” reads a note posted on the updated WhatsApp iOS web page.

“WhatsApp calls use your phone’s internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes. Data charges may apply. Note: WhatsApp Calling is rolling out slowly over the next several weeks,” reads the note, indicating that not all Apple iPhone users will have access to the feature.

WhatsApp’s move to roll out its voice calling feature for iPhone users comes after the instant messaging app first piloted the offering for phones equipped with Google Android.

After first offering the voice calling service on Android on an invite-only basis, WhatsApp then rolled out the offering to all users.

WhatsApp claims to have 800 million users across the globe, posing a threat to traditional mobile networks’ SMS and voice businesses.
