Johannesburg - Mobile network Vodacom’s drive to attract more data users is being stepped up after it unveiled its R799 Smart 6 branded smartphone which is equipped with Android 4.4.
The four inch device is the latest in a range of Vodacom branded smartphones to hit the South African market.
Other specifications of the device include a weight of 110g, a 800 x 480 pixel resolution, a 1GHz dual core processor, 512MB of RAM, a 1 400 milliampere hour battery that has seven hours of talk-time, and 4GB built-in memory.
Vodacom also says the camera offers 3 megapixel resolution.
Prepaid Vodacom customers can buy the phone for R799 while the device will also be offered via the company’s uChoose flexi 110 contract which will be priced at R99 per month. Vodacom is also promising prepaid customers 100MB free data per month for the first six months.
Vodacom’s move to unveil the device comes after it launched its R1 499 LTE-enabled Smart 4 Turbo device in February this year.
The move by Vodacom to sell its own branded smartphones also comes as local mobile networks increasingly shift their attention to data as phone users are using less voice minutes.
Vodacom reported last month that its data revenue has grown 23.4% to R13.538bn thanks to more affordable devices, increased bundles sold and greater coverage.
