Telkom cuts its pre-paid data prices

Johannesburg - Telkom is slashing its mobile pre-paid data prices as competition in the local telecommunications market heats up.

The company announced on Monday that it has made revisions to its pricing structure.

In terms of Telkom’s out of bundle pre-paid data rate, this fee has been cut from R1 to R0.29.

Telkom operates South Africa’s smallest mobile network with just 2.1 million subscribers, according to its annual results announcement earlier this month.

“We have revised and simplified our data bundles in order to provide the best value and service to our customers. We believe everyone should have access to the data they need, when they need it,” said Telkom spokesperson Attila Vitai, Telkom’s managing director for consumer and mobile services.

Pricing

The company also notes in its statement that “these pre-paid data bundles will be valid until the end of the next calendar month rather than the industry standard of only 30 days which provides further value to the customer”.

Telkom has also announced that it is changing its pre-paid bundle packages.

In its statement, Telkom said its previous 2GB + 1GB, 25GB + 25GB and the 60GB + 60GB bundles have been replaced with 3GB, 20GB and 50GB internet bundles respectively.

Growing competition

Telkom’s cut in pre-paid pricing comes amid growing competition in the lower end of the market.

This year has seen an uptick in the number of mobile virtual network operators in South Africa. These operators, such as me&you mobile and First National Bank’s Connect networks use Cell C’s infrastructure.
