Cape Town - Mobile network MTN has apologised for any service disruptions as the company prepares for strike action.
MTN staff affiliated to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have outlined their intention to strike over bonus pay.
"Customers are urged to be patient should they experience any delays when trying to reach our call centres. MTN SA will do its best to meet the needs of all our valued customers, as we remain committed to maintaining high levels of service at all times," MTN said in a statement.
The company said it has offered guaranteed bonus pay of 4% of annual salaries in ongoing engagements with the union.
But the union rejected this, saying that previous agreements pegged bonus pay at 30%.
"They [MTN] had an agreement to pay workers at 30% and the latest one was 16%. We are calling on them to pay workers a bonus of 16%, but we are negotiable on that," CWU President Clyde Mervin told Fin24 amid ongoing negotiations.
In addition, MTN has guaranteed a 13th cheque in March irrespective of company performance.
The CWU has around 27 000 members but MTN said that it does not recognise the union as "it does not meet the membership threshold as required by the law".
"MTN must not come with their tricks. We have been engaging with them on recognition and we have the evidence to prove it," Mervin said, adding that about 2 000 MTN workers belonged to the union.
