BlackBerry to Samsung: Not so fast on best battery boast

Cape Town - People may love their smartphones, but these fancy gadgets can sometimes exhaust their batteries long before the day is done.

Samsung recently took aim at iPhones for their reputation for poor battery performance.

The company called iPhone users "wall huggers" for their reliance on public electrical sockets to keep their phones active for calls, browsing and apps.

But not so fast, says BlackBerry.

The Canadian-based company took on Samsung saying that its Z30 outperformed rival smartphones when it came to battery life.

Battery king

"With better battery life than the Samsung Galaxy S5, BlackBerry Z30 owners use their device to remain productive throughout the business day and stream their favourite TV show or movie during the commute to and from the office," BlackBerry said on its Factcheck blog platform.

The company claims that the Z30 produces "up to 25 hours mixed use" without enabling battery saving features commonly found on Android powered smartphones.

The claim seems to have some support online. TechRadar did a 90 minute video test and found that Z30 battery performed well.

GSM Arena also had praise for the 2880mAh BlackBerry battery, but gave it an average score in multiple tests.

Historically, the Motorola Razr, launched in 2011, gave the best smartphone battery performance. In a review on News24, the Moto went over three days on the battery, but the device was not widely available in SA.

Here's the Samsung video that took on the iPhone over battery use.
