Cape Town - After being virtually absent from the consumer market in SA for a while Alcatel OneTouch is back with a bang.
The manufacturer is launching a range of devices in SA as it looks to woo back South Africans.
In the early days of cellphones, the Alcatel brand was familiar with devices like the One Touch, but the French company withdrew almost completely from the mobile device space. China’s TCL Communication formed a partnership with France’s
Alcatel Lucent in 2004 to manage its handset business, but Alcatel Lucent
later sold its shares in its handset business to TCL and hence the brand today
is known as Alcatel OneTouch.
Fast forward nearly a decade and Alcatel OneTouch is back with a new range as the company displayed its wares at the AfricaCom tech conference that runs in Cape Town until Friday.
While the new Alcatel OneTouch devices have price points starting at around R1 800 going up to R5 000, they sport quad core processors and large touch screens.
These features should see healthy adoption in developing countries where consumers are price sensitive and lower priced phones have gained significant traction.

*Correction: Previously, Fin24 referred to 'Alcatel-Lucent' in this story, which is incorrect. The correct company referred to in the story is 'Alcatel OneTouch', which is owned by China's TCL Communication. A paragraph was added to explain this ownership structure.
