Johannesburg - Apple will likely unveil their next iPhone on September 7.
The next iPhone - billed to be the "iPhone 7" according to speculation on Twitter - is expected to be launched next month following the trend of previous iPhone launches during the month of September.
The iPhone 6 was launched on September 19, 2014 and the iPhone 5 on September 21, 2012.
“S” models of the devices were then launched in 2013 and last year with release of the iPhone 6.
An invite to the launch event - which is set to take place at the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco at 10am Pacific Time (7pm South African time) - simply stated “See you on the 7th.”
The invite was sent to media and guests, setting the internet abuzz around what is believed to the company’s latest flagship smartphone.
With the launch of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, history suggests 2016 to be the due date for the “iPhone 7”.
However, online gossip is suggesting that Apple could save the name 'iPhone 7' for it's 2017 model.
Recently, Bloomberg reported that well-placed sources believed the next device would feature a re-engineered home button and dual camera functionality. The company may also ditch the headphone jack in favour of Bluetooth or charging port connections to earphones, according to reports.

The device is also likely to include a better camera, faster processor and a slightly tweaked body from the iPhone 6.
More outrageous and unlikely rumours suggest that Apple could unveil an all-glass frame for the phone or a frame made from OLED, giving the device a flexible body.
However, more often than not, most new Apple features have been included in smartphones from competitors prior to the launch of their new devices.
Apple’s devoted cult-following also believe that the Watch 2, the successor to the company’s first try at wearables, will be launched alongside the next smartphone. A new MacBook is also on the cards, according to speculators.
