Johannesburg - The epitome of the home theatre experience is the Samsung curved 55-inch SUHD TV – a unit that offers a viewing experience that is hard to match.
While the ‘UHD’ stands for Ultra-High-Definition, the ‘S’ in ‘SUHD’ is not really an abbreviation for anything but marks the company’s line of 4K resolution televisions.
This Samsung TV forms part of the company’s SUHD Quantum Dot 4K TV range, which are made up of minute particles that emit various colours and act as the light source.
These TVs also make use of HDR 1000 technology, or Samsung’s version of HDR premium, which allow for more detail in the brightest and the darkest areas of an image.

Dark colours on the screen are seen even darker without the pixelated effect witnessed on many HD TVs.
Samsung's 55-inch unit, though, needs a big room for maximum viewing potential. The picture quality of the unit is best seen in a large room in which viewers are able to be seated in front of the TV.
Because of the curved display, the TV offers a more immersive picture even without a 3D mode – a feature that the TV does offer.
The Auto Depth Enhancer feature in the TV also allows for more depth that immerses the viewer into the picture making subjects of an image more in focus in comparison to the screen.
The unit has also shown that Samsung Smart TVs have become even smarter, while the new interface proves to be more efficient.
The older smart software on the TV was clumsy and not user friendly, with the SUHD version working in synergy with the new simplified remote.

The TV is also able to detect when the input running through the TV – for example when using a device such as a gaming console or Blu-ray player connected via an HDMI port. The TV will automatically detect and switch to the input.
The design of the unit offers an almost bezel-less face, while standing on a tripod stand with no visible screws. This makes the unit eye-pleasing even when unnecessarily looking at the back of the unit.
The SUHD sets the benchmark for the next wave of TVs. However, being a 4K-ready unit, content such as box office movies are not always available while most pay-TV services only offer 1080p HD content.
The only way to experience 4K content is to stream it, which often tends to consume more data and requires pausing for buffering the large file.
Nevertheless, if South Africa's web speed stakes improve, this could be one of THE televisions to own.
