Cape Town – The latest version of the Raspberry Pi customisable computer has been launched in South Africa.
The Pi 3 is manufactured in the UK and will sell in SA for R642 excluding VAT. It is available for online orders here.
Version three of the gadget - which is popular with tech enthusiasts and engineers - has been launched with an enhanced ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core processor running at 1.2GHz, expected to deliver 50% more performance than the Pi 2, said distributor RS Components.
"We are unveiling the third-generation Raspberry Pi four years to the day after the launch of the original Raspberry Pi board on February 29 2012,” Eben Upton, founder of Raspberry Pi said in a statement.
The new Pi features enhanced video support, Bluetooth Classic and Low Energy, 64-bit support, and boots the Raspbian operating system from a micro-SD card.
“Based on the robust and well proven combination of hardware and software of the Raspberry Pi platform, this latest generation board delivers even more processing power together with embedded wireless connectivity, plus software to make it easy for businesses or individuals to develop applications for the Internet of Things,” said Lindsley Ruth, chief executive at Electrocomponents, RS parent company.
