Samsung confirms new smartphones coming to SA

Cape Town - Samsung has confirmed that South Africans will have to wait a few weeks to get their hands on the company's latest gadgets.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 in New York on Thursday night and revealed to Fin24 that the smartphones will be available in South Africa in September and November respectively.

Globally, the devices will begin shipping on August 21.

Exact dates and pricing for SA are subject to local operators.

Samsung has also talked up the devices' link to its new mobile payment service, Samsung Pay.

The payment service will launch in South Korea on September 20, but it's unclear as to whether this service could be available in South Africa as well.

Samsung is pinning its hopes on e-commerce so that the electronics giant can diversify and boost profits that have taken a hit from slower than expected sales of its smartphones.

According to International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung led the smartphone market in the second quarter with a 21.7% market share, even though sales dipped from a year earlier. Its market share was also below 24.8% in the same period a year ago.
