Motorola a hit on SA's Orange online store

Cape Town - Phone brand Motorola has rocketed to the top of the Orange online store rankings in South African.

The top selling smartphone in the first three months of the year is the Motorola Moto G, followed by the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and LG G3.

"The uptake continues to grow monthly, with the first quarter of 2015 being a particularly successful quarter in terms of sales," Orange Horizons said, adding that sales had far surpassed expectations.

Here are the top ten selling smartphones:

1. Motorola Moto G (2nd Gen.)
2. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
3. LG G3
4. Huawei Ascend P7
5. Sony Xperia Z2
6. Sony Xperia Z3
7. Google Nexus 6
8. Google Nexus 5
9. Nokia Lumia 630 Double SIM
10. Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Part of the success of the Orange online store is that its devices can cost less than traditional South African retail outlets.

For example, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge costs R11 010, cheaper than the retail price in SA from operators such as Vodacom.

However, critics have pointed to the lack of a physical store for customers to engage with for after sales support. Plans by Orange to launch a store in Cape Town have been delayed this year.

The company, though, does have a warehouse in Johannesburg.

"The success of the online store has led to the growth of the Orange Horizons presence in South Africa, through a local warehouse which continues to stock more and more products as the demand from our customers increases, as well as the establishment of a physical store set to open in the coming months," said Blake Levitan, Orange Horizons South Africa country manager.

The Orange online store also disturbs established retail agreements in that devices that haven't officially launched in the country are available online.

Here are the top devices on the Orange Store:

1. Motorola Moto G (2nd Gen.)
2. Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
3. LG G3
4. Huawei Ascend P7
5. Sony Xperia Z2
6. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite 7.0
7. Sony Xperia Z3
8. Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1
9. Motorola Flip Shell for Motorola Moto G
(2nd Gen.)
10. Google Nexus 6
