Johannesburg - Network provider MTN [MTN]on Wednesday posted a 7.1% rise in total revenue for the quarter ending March 31, despite a marginal decline in subscribers of 1.5%.
Group total revenue increased by 7.1%, with data revenues up 29.4% year-on-year, contributing 20% to total revenue.
“In March 2017, we completed the evolution of the core senior management team. The new group president and chief executive officer, chief financial officer and chief operating officer are now in place and have settled in, swiftly adjusting to their respective roles while beginning a review of the business to see where further improvements can be made,” MTN said in a statement.

While MTN South Africa reported a 4.1% increase in service revenue, group subscribers fell by 1.5% quarter-on-quarter, largely as a result of restatements to subscriber numbers in Ghana, Rwanda and Zambia.
MTN Nigeria reported an 11.6% increase in total revenue, with MTN Irancell showing a 19.3% lift in total revenue benefiting from encouraging data revenue trends.
Data traffic went up by 145%, with voice traffic increasing by 2%.
MTN said that network improvement continued across the group, particularly in the Nigerian, South African and Iranian operations supported by year-to-date capital expenditure at R4 619m.

“In the first three months of the year we saw a continuation of the improving operational momentum experienced in the fourth quarter of 2016.
“While we still have work to do to meet our full-year targets, we continue to leverage off the progress made during 2016," said MTN group president and CEO Rob Shuter.
