Cape Town - Microsoft has moved to increase the cloud data for its customers as the company focuses on its software services business.
On Monday, the Redmond, Washington company announced an increase in online storage from 7GB to 15GB with its One Drive storage offer.
"It's also clear that you want more than just the ability to store your stuff in the cloud. You want to be able to share it, to collaborate on it, and so much more. The landscape is changing to the point that we believe it's no longer enough to provide only cloud storage - that's table stakes," wrote Omar Shahine on the Microsoft blog.
Microsoft has been migrating its software to the internet cloud as it recognises that its subscribers use its software across multiple devices.
Online storage provides an easy way to access and share multiple documents and rich media content.
Subscriber-based model
"Our data tells us that three out of four people have less than 15GB of files stored on their PC. Factoring in what they may also have stored on other devices, we believe providing 15GB for free right out of the gate - with no hoops to jump through - will make it much easier for people to have their documents, videos, and photos available in one place," said Shahine.
Under new CEO Satya Nadella, the company has re-engineered its Office software to be offered on Apple iPad tablets as well as Android smartphones.
There has also been a shift to a subscriber-based model where users purchase Office via a monthly basis and the company updates the software consistently.
Popular online storage service Dropbox offers 2GB of free storage and Google Drive allows users to store 15GB.
Shahine said that there would be an increase in the online storage for Office documents.
"Soon you will get 1TB [Terabyte] of OneDrive with your subscription to Office 365."
