Cape Town - Readership of Media24's local newspaper titles increased by 1.2 million between last year and this year, according to research released on Tuesday.
The Compass24 research showed that total national readership of 86 local titles stood at over 6.7 million people.
Ads24 commissioned Ask Afrika to conduct the research because local titles were not measured in the All Media Products Survey.
The research was based on a nationally representative sample size of 33 000 individuals.
Ask Afrika CEO Andrea Rademeyer said the research showed high penetration levels and strong uptake.
"Local newspapers are powerful. They have impact and can wield a lot of influence on society, facilitating informed conversations with advertisers," she said.
"In a country such as South Africa where internet penetration has not quite got to the masses, newspapers serve to expose, enlighten, inform, educate, and inspire."
The research revealed that local readers rated the most interesting and relevant topics as community news, crime and policing, sales and promotions, social news, and corporate social investment initiatives.
