THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE in the United States dropped and the number of jobs created in the economy in May rose, but that was expected – mainly due to extraordinary factors relating to government employment. The underlying situation for the US private sector isn’t as strong as many in the markets had hoped. Expectations are that US interest rates – currently close to zero – will rise only once employment has risen meaningfully.
