More about the competition

With this competition you can learn more about investing on the JSE without any risk.

Many existing and potential investors wish to learn more about investing on the JSE without risk before they use real money. Others wish to hone their skills and try new strategies. Sanlam iTrade's Virtual Trade Simulator (VTS) makes it possible to manage a virtual portfolio to gain new experience.

You will be able to practice before the competition starts, so register NOW!

Main features of this virtual competition
  • Trade in any of the Top 100 shares on the JSE. No penny stocks included.
  • Buy and sell as many times as you want and whenever you want.
  • Buy at the offer price and sell at the bid price, not the last traded price.
  • Make use of our comprehensive share data, charting, research and learning centre.
  • All this at no cost with great prizes to be won.
  • 1st Prize – R100 000 (real money, not virtual)
  • 2nd Prize – iPad 2
  • 3rd Prize – iPhone 3

Details:
  • The competition is free and anyone can enter, see rules for exceptions.
  • The competition will run from Wednesday 15 June to Wednesday 14 September.
  • Each participant will receive a fictitious R1m to invest.
  • A fictitious broking fee of 0.5% will be levied on all transactions.
  • The JSE is kindly sponsoring live prices for the competition.
  • All transactions are done online. Orders can be placed any time, but trades will be executed between 09h05 and 16h45 on JSE trading days. Virtual trading will not be allowed in the opening and closing auctions of the JSE as bid and offer prices are sometimes erratic.
  • When buying an instrument on the VTS, the price at which the trade will take place is the last recorded offer price on the JSE, that is the best price at which real sellers on the JSE are prepared to sell shares. When selling an instrument, the price at which the trade will take place is the last recorded bid price, that is the best price at which real buyers on the JSE are prepared to buy shares. The best live offer price will be displayed when selecting “Buy” on the VTS and the best live bid price will be displayed when choosing “Sell”. There is no volume check, so all trades will be filled at the price explained above. This makes virtual trading a bit more realistic than the trading at the last traded price, because volumes can sometimes be very small for illiquid shares.

Example:
Control Instruments (an old favourite in our virtual competitions) have a best bid price of 35c, best offer price of 48c and last traded at 40c. Virtual Traders can only buy at 48c and if they want to sell they can only sell at 35c. This prevents them from buying at 40c even if only a meager 100 or 200 shares traded at 40c, and selling later at 48c if there is another small trade at 48c. The difference between bid and offer prices for liquid shares are very small and not a problem.

  • Traders are specifically reminded that it is a contravention to manipulate real share prices on the JSE in any way. Do not get a friend or colleague to make suspicious bids and offers on the JSE in less liquid shares to enhance profits in the virtual competition.
  • To alleviate congestion when the competition starts, no new registrations will be allowed during the first two days of the competition. After that registration will be allowed up to the last week of the competition.
