Johannesburg - Thousands of visitors on a single day have earned the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town the "Busiest Day of the Year" award for a regional shopping centre.

The shopping mecca, one of the country's most popular tourist attractions, walked off with the award after having attracted a record number of 161 473 visitors on December 31 last year.

This brought the number of visitors for the month to 2.7m.

The award was introduced in 2005 by HeadCount Systems, a data company monitoring visitors.

The V&A Waterfront competed for the prize with 24 other regional centres of much the same overall rental space form around the country.

Annemie Liebenberg, the V&A Waterfront’s manager for tourism, client services and communication, says the centre is prepared for a stampede during the coming World Cup soccer tournament.

The centre will be particularly popular because the soccer stadium is within walking distance.

According to SA Tourism more than 200 000 international visitors are expected in the Mother City during tournament.

Another popular tourist destination that is looking forward to a rush of visitors during the tournament is Hyprop’s Canal Walk centre at Century City. The company says 2.3m visitors passed through Canal Walk in December.

The day with the highest number of visitors was December 23, when 112 000 shoppers were counted.

Hyprop expects the number of visitors during the soccer tournament to be much like the number visiting the centre during December.
