Pretoria - More South Africans are living in formal housing, but proportionally less of them own homes, according to the general household survey released on Tuesday.
The survey showed that 75.5% of South African households in 2009 lived in formal housing compared to 73.7% in 2002.
The percentage of households in informal dwellings also increased slightly over the same period from 13% to 13.4%.
The survey was based on a quarter of 30 000 representative households.
The proportion of households renting their residential dwelling increased from 18.4% in 2002 to 20.2% in 2009.
However those owning their homes declined significantly from 68.7% in 2002 to 65.2% in 2009.
The survey also revealed that nationally, access to flush toilets increased from 18.4% in 2002 to 24.1% in 2009.
Access to flush toilets was best in the Western Cape at 72.8% followed by Gauteng where 50% of households have access to flush toilets.
