A university education gives students the chance to create a better future for themselves, their families and to opportunity achieve their dreams.
In the video below we asked the scholarship students what university has meant to them, and what they dream they are studying towards.
It was a chance for them to tell their story of how bursary funding and the opportunity through the UJ missing middle fund has and will continue to benefit them, their communities and South Africa as a whole.
The 2015 #FeesMustFall movement brought to light the many issues facing South African tertiary education facilities. In response the University of Johannesburg created an initiative called #UJBeTheSolution in where they opened up discussions and created platforms where they could listen to the issues that students and staff are facing and create solutions as to how they can improve the situations.
Despite the struggles last year, the University of Johannesburg saw a record number of students graduate from its undergraduate class, and released a new crop of graduates into the world trained and ready to make a change.
"Greatness does not imply that UJ should be the preserve of the privileged only, but should be enjoyed by all deserving citizens. We continue to welcome students from all classes and backgrounds, to uplift those who have struggled, and to make a major contribution to creating a more just, equitable and fair South Africa,” UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Ihron Rensburg said.
