New partnership to bring a range of exciting voices to the GSB

Cape Town - The UCT Graduate School of Business (GSB) has teamed up with Fin24 to develop a range of thought leadership speaker events, which is set to bring a number of high profile voices to the school and broaden the debate on current affairs.

The series will begin with a treasury panel discussion on 28 March 2017 on the topic: “A budget focused on ensuring inclusive growth and broad-based transformation”. Led by Treasury Director-General Lungisa Fuzile, the event will be streamed live by Fin24.

“The GSB believes in the power of bringing together prominent leaders and encouraging debate and discussion on the issues that impact on the South African economy and democracy,” says GSB Director Associate Professor Mills Soko. “The media plays a vital role in any free society and we are excited about this new partnership with Fin24.”

With the Treasury firmly at the centre of the current political and economic debate, the conversation that will unfold at this inaugural event is likely to be an interesting one, says Associate Professor Soko.

Lungisa Fuzile holds a Master of Commerce degree and has vast experience in the public service, including providing strategic leadership to the development and maintenance of the intergovernmental fiscal framework as head of the Intergovernmental Relations division.

He was appointed Director-General of the National Treasury in 2011 and his responsibilities comprise managing the department, producing a sound and sustainable national budget, managing government’s financial assets and liabilities and overseeing government accounting policies and standards as well as developing appropriate fiscal policies and improving financial management throughout government.

He will be joined on the panel by respected academic, Dr Sean Gossel, a faculty member at the GSB whose expertise lies in the areas of finance, financial economics and financial globalisation. He is also a research collaborator at the UCT’s Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy and the GSB’s Development Finance Centre.

“These are the kinds of conversations that South Africa really needs right now,” says Fadia Salie, Editor of Fin24. “As a relied upon source of reliable business news, it made sense for us to team up with the GSB – widely accepted as Africa’s top business school – to bring these voices to our audience too. The business school has the credibility and the connections to convene a powerful group of speakers and we have the platform to ensure that these get heard as widely as possible. We are very excited about this partnership.”

“The GSB speaker events are always highlights on the business school’s calendar,” agrees Saskia Hickey, Market Intelligence and Strategy Manager at the GSB. “It is about quality conversations and dialogue, sparking new ideas and fresh ways of thinking about the most important drivers in the world of business as well as society at large.”
