Lusaka - Shoprite Checkers has been ordered to stop converting the status of 1 000 employees at its Zambian stores to temporary workers.
The Zambian government demands that all employees of the South African group be appointed on a permanent basis, in line with the country's labour legislation, said Simon Kachimba, deputy minister of labour and social security on Monday.
Kachimba reported that the government had had a meeting with Shoprite Checkers, and that it did not support any switching of the status of employees to temporary worker.
The guidelines that it will give Shoprite Checkers also apply to other companies.
"We are going to announce proposals for contracts that all companies have to follow when employing Zambians," Kachimba declared.
The government also said that it appreciated Shoprite Checkers' training programmes for Zambians, and the fact that Zambians were being sent to manage stores in other African countries.
Shoprite Checkers has more than 20 stores in Zambia and is one of the country's foremost retail chains.
