Cape Town - Mandi Smallhorne's column Take the red flags seriously continues to generate a passionate response among Fin24 users.
Fin24 user Mark Turner writes: "It is actually sad that the citizens of this beloved country are at each other, and those responsible 'Zuma Inc' are sitting back and laughing."
An ANC member of 40-plus years' standing, Turner continues that "for us now still to be playing the race card speaks to our ineptitude to run the country other than 'loot while we can'." The problem, he says, is neither whites nor blacks nor anyone else: "it is the present government".
In her counter-response to readers' comments in the article Heated debate over guilt card or white privilege, Smallhorne refers to Marie Antoinette, the French queen who was famously ignorant of the plight of the common people and was beheaded during the French revolution.
Turner feels this comparison is inappropriate: "Yes, there had been and still is white privilege, and yes, the arrogance of some white privileged like the banks, medical to name a few, does not contribute to nation building... but to even infer that such an atrocity awaits the white people smacks of ignorance and then to temper it with 'I was also privileged, albeit to a lesser extent' does not speak of being responsible."
On the matter of tax, Turner asks: "... how much more does the cabal Zuma Inc still want to take in the form of taxes, etc."?
Government is creating a downward spiral, says Turner, adding that "it is impossible to have an unemployment rate of 25.5% and 16% of the population on social grants, Zuma Inc stealing till they can't any more and then still expect to have a thriving country... 'Cry the beloved Country'."
