Cape Town - There has been mixed reaction from Fin24 users to the latest promotional campaigns at South African retailers Pick n Pay, Spar and Checkers.
Fin24 reported this week about a mini craze among South Africans as local retailers pull out all the stops to lure even more customers - big and small - to their stores.

Pick n Pay followed up its Stikeez campaign with a Super Animals campaign. For every R150 spent at any Pick n Pay, you get a free pack of four collectible Super Animal cards that can be scanned, using Pick n Pay’s free app, to "bring the animal on the card to life".
There are 108 cards to collect in nine categories. Each card has a barcode that can be read by a Sound Card Reader, available at Pick n Pay for R50.
At Spar shoppers are rewarded with Angry Birds merchandise. For every R150 spent, shoppers get an Angry Birds pack with a 3D lenticular card and a Spar sticker. There are 24 lenticulars to collect.
At Checkers shoppers are rewarded with a free Little Shop mini retail item for every R150 spent in-store.
The campaign, a collaborative promotion between Checkers and some of its key suppliers launched a week ago, also aims at giving children an opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship.
Fin24 user Kerry-Anne Meyer is excited about the latest campaign and writes: "Oh good, we've just done collecting all the Angry Birds from Spar. Now I'll go collect from Checkers."
Fin24 user Janine Wright, however, is not that impressed: "Quite frankly, I think these promotions are a waste of money and environmentally unfriendly. I would rather they give a discount to the value that these items cost to make. Not impressed," she writes.
Fin24 user Leonie Auret says she and her boyfriend "have been bitten by the Spar Angry Bird craze".
"We have collected 1x Red, 2x Chuck, 2x Bomb, 2x Leonard and 2x Stella teddies. We love shopping at Spar and the Angry Birds have added extra excitement to our shopping trips," she writes.
Perhaps Fin24 user Ingrid Bradfield's comment on the Fin24 Facebook page sums it up the best: "I am watching all these campaigns with interest from a marketing point of view. Let's see whose bottom line will reflect the win!"
Danielle Lamprecht (7) from Middelburg, Mpumalanga, is super proud of her Angry Birds collection:
