Only a genius can calculate toll payments

Fin24 user Tony Bagnall says he has made no attempt to evade e-toll payments but has not received any kind of invoice, and would be hard put to work out exactly what he owes Sanral. He writes:

I use the e-tolled freeways but I do not get any bills. I have no idea why not. My vehicle is properly registered and as far as I am aware, all my particulars seem to be accurately represented on the eNatis data base.

I have received traffic fines via mail in the past. I am not tagged but my number plates are perfectly clean. I am not doing anything to evade detection.

I have not kept any particular record of gantries passed so I have no starting point to figure out how much, if anything, has been clocked up. Even if I had kept a detailed record of gantries passed and when I passed them, the different fees for different gantries and different circumstances are rather confusing.

Add to this the varying discounts and/or penalties set out for seven days, 37 days and 67 days, time of day discounts and now a “special”  51-day discount put forward by the minister of transport and agreed to by the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

You need more than Matric

I defy just about anyone to be able to work out what is to be paid and how it changes as time goes by and new journeys are added. You would need a highly detailed log and you would need to be a mathematical genius to sort it out. A Matric pass would certainly not be sufficient.

I am not trying to avoid being invoiced but neither do I feel any desire or obligation to run after Sanral to find out what is going on. I am not sure what I will do if and when an invoice or invoices arrive. I do not know what information is contained on their invoice and whether or not there is adequate proof (gantry passes, times, dates and rates) to support their billing.

If there is not, there would be reason for doubt. In my (69 years') experience, once you get on the wrong side of the money, the fellow on the right side becomes totally uninterested in sorting out any error that would give rise to a credit being passed.
