A Fin24 user who was duped into making an advance payment for a car purchase on Junkmail tells his story:
This might be an old incident, but on September 5 2011, I was defrauded of an amount of R14 500.00.
I saw an ad on Junkmail for a car that I wanted to purchase; it was through my own stupidity that I lost this money.
However, the story unfolded like this: I received an email from a gentleman named Matt Wollwith, probably not even his real name. We communicated via email and I kept on requesting him to send me his phone number to contact him regarding the car, that never happened.
He told me that I should deposit R14 500.00 via Moneygram, which I did, stupidly enough.
I notified him that I would be collecting the car the following day with the balance of the amount he requested. Since that day up until today I have not heard from him.
I would just like to inform everybody out there, there are real scam artists out there that want to take your hard-earned money, that is why they say you learn from your mistakes.
I learned from that, now I am greedy with my money, not paying for anything, so please advise the people out there that they should be extra careful when transacting online.
