Nomura emerging markets expert Peter Attard Montalto has added his voice to the many tributes pouring in for former president Nelson Mandela. He writes:
Extremely sad news tonight (Thursday night) that Nelson Mandela has passed away. He was an amazing icon who was both an inspiration yet truly human as well, which is why so many people felt such a connection to him.
He was ill for a long time and never really recovered after his recent stint in hospital, being treated for lung disease due to his time on Robben Island.
I've written a lot in the past about the market impact and political impact of South Africa without Madiba, and I still believe he has left a strong enough country with solid foundations to mean we should dismiss the inevitable doomsayers and expect little market reaction. That's all I want to say on that subject at this time.
Having been connected with South Africa now for eight years and interacted with a lot of people who knew Madiba and some who were in prison with him, I think this is a time to reflect on his wish for South Africa to be a truly non-racial democratic country.
This is something that it now less assured than in the past. This wish of his was brought home this evening to me in particular before I found out the news, as a guest of the Nelson Mandela Foundation in London at the premiere of the film of his book The Long Walk to Freedom and a fitting tribute to his life, struggle and legacy.
