Load shedding survival guide: Plea for Eskom to play open cards

Cape Town - It should be a standard requirement for Eskom to justify the need for load shedding to its customers, and to further justify the stage (stage 1 to 4) by stating how many and which generators affect their output, says a Fin24 user.

The user from Kanyamazane who wish to remain anonymous insisted that Eskom must also list those generators and make avail the failure history.

"Currently, all they have to tell us is that they are implementing Stage X load shedding due to failure of generators or  planned maintenance on generators.

"Let us know which generators have been overhauled due to failure or preventative maintenance cycle, then we will not expect them to be on the list of failures for at least a year. Should these reappear on the list, there should be an investigation and penalties," he writes.

The user, who was responding to a call to join the war effort and share load shedding survival tips says his township in Kanyamazane experiences load shedding every time Eskom implements power cuts, but there is no load shedding schedule for the township in the Eskom website.

"According to Eskom, there is a technical glitch which they will sort out later. Load shedding started in November last year, six months down the line, they have not yet sorted the schedules for their direct customers!

"Why load shed an area when there is a technical glitch which prevents them from informing their customers about the impending power cut? The point is: there is too much negligence and contempt from Eskom."

He says the government should impose on Eskom to make available to its customers an audit trail for breakdown and preventative maintenance.

"We don't know how many generators have been maintained, and how many of those that have been maintained can be classified as reliable."
