Joburg water disruption cancelled amid complaints

Cape Town - Johannesburg Water has informed residents that water disruptions scheduled to take place this week have been cancelled.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela told Fin24 that the department has “a few logistical issues that need to be sorted before a new date will be set out”.

Planned water disruption scheduled to take place from 07:00 on April 21 to 07:00 on April 23 for infrastructure upgrades in Parktown, Houghton, Melrose and surrounding areas has been cancelled until further notice.

Other suburbs set to be affected included: Waverly, Perceli, Highlands North, Fairmount, Talboton, Raedene Estate, Hawkons Estate, Oaklands, The Gardens, Cheltondale, Orchards, Maryvale, Victoria, Norwood, Orange Grove, Houghton Estates, Fellside, Rosebank, Melrose and Melrose Estate, Dunkeld, Parkwood, Parktown North, Saxonwold, Riviera and Houghton Estates.

Unhappy with service

Last week Fin24 users living in the affected areas voiced disapproval and unhappiness with the service they have been receiving from Johannesburg Water.

Trevor Miller from Highlands North lamented the indignity of more service interruptions, asking “will council supply us water tankers to provide us with water for drinking and sanitation purposes during this interruption?”

“Presumably we will have to 'splash out' on purchasing largish containers to store the water during this period,” he said.

Avryl Machet expressed her concern that schools in the area could be severely affected, and added that two days are too long for toilets to be without water. She asked whether the maintenance could not be carried out over a weekend.

Tania Southey said she would have been completely unaware of the two-day water cut had it not been for the Fin24 article. “I live in this area, and have not had a flyer to notify us of this water cut,” she said.
