In his book review 24-hour days just don't work, Ian Mann says: "Technology was supposed to make our working lives easier, and our
workdays shorter. Two decades later, we are still waiting for promised
spare time....
"We need to separate the essential from the non-essential only because we cannot meet all our commitments to work, friends, family, social causes, and the rest. The time required simply is unavailable. There are only 24 hours each day. That is it."
In response to this, Fin24 user Tumisang Moumakoe writes:
There are four main important things in my life: success within my chosen career path, enough rest, a hobby which is golf and a social life.
If all fails within my career, I cannot do golf, get enough rest, do a hobby or enjoy a healthy social life because I will have no money to do so, so career takes first priority unless I can get an easier and sustainable income.
Rest is second in my hierarchy, mainly because without enough of it the mind and body works too hard until you eventually can't do anything right or with enough enthusiasm. You become a zombie within your career, hobby and social life.
Golf (hobby) takes third on the list because it is an activity that I do to relax my mind, detach myself from everyday stresses and allow more clarity in my thoughts when I get back to life. It is like medicine.
Social comes last, not that it is absolutely redundant but more that I can survive longer periods without it.
Social is important because humans are social beings and life eventually becomes sad and dull when you are alone. My social life comes with all the instability within my routine, career, rest and hobby life, mainly because time spent with friends is spontaneous and anything could happen, eg a night out drinking, a road trip, or other activities that cannot be timed and ultimately forcing you to sacrifice a task from the routine career, sleep and hobby.
My daily priority routine is career, hobby, and enough sleep. Social comes only near or during the weekend because of its instability.
The priority routine is flexible and you change it according to your situation, for example my routine will change when I start considering to settle down and start a family.
* What comes first on your list of priorities? How do or don't you manage to fill the 24 hours of the day with meaningful activities? Let us us know and you could get published.
