Fin24 received a call from a user who had to walk a couple of kilometres in order to report that he had no cell phone coverage since Saturday January 18.
The user, from Redelinghuys, a rural area, said he also could not get any access to the internet via his phone.
Once he did have such access again, there was an email from Vodacom stating that "due to emergency maintenance that is required on
the Vodamail Servers, the Vodamail service will be unavailable on the 15th of October 2010 from 20:00 till 16th of October 2010 08:00".
Fin24 approached Vodacom about the user's problem and a spokesperson supplied the following response:
Our team in the Western Cape said on Saturday there was a power failure that resulted in three of our base stations/sites being taken offline in the area.
The three sites are serviced by a battery back-up. However, Vodacom does not have after hours access to these sites and so could not restore the power until this morning.
The sites were up and running again by 10:00 Monday morning.
Aside from this incidence there have been no reported issues in the Redelinghuys area.
Having said that, there are a number of reasons that a person’s signal can be degraded.
These could range from a faulty handset or a software upgrade right down to changes in the topography of the area.
As such, we need to investigate each individual situation.
