Fin24 has been inundated with emails from readers eager to give their opinion of Gauteng's controversial e-toll roll-out.
In a strongly-worded letter user Naledi Soga writes:
I HATE all these people who decided that we pay for e-tolls, they are all a self-serving bunch of humans.
With what are we going to pay for e-tolls when we struggle to pay for our food and petrol? Is it because they will pass the e-tolls with their blue lights and won't pay a cent? People should open their eyes and vote wisely not for the name but for a party that will serve the poor people of this country.
We want people who will understand that being in power in government is not about them showing off, but to make sure that every citizen of this country has all the basic needs (jobs, shelter, electricity, education, healthcare, water, sanitation) and that they are available and affordable to them.
The current government and top officials don't care about ordinary people. The only thing they want is to be treated like gods and be praised by people. Even the junior officials in the government are ill-treated by those in power to instil fear.
Is this the freedom that people died for? I don't think so. People of South Africa, enough is enough!
We want change... and leaders who have conscience, integrity, empathy and who truly know and understand the struggles of the people - and not just say they do.
User Sphiwowo wrote: "I am much disappointed in the way the government took this e-toll saga to rather hurt and not hear the people, completely ignoring the Freedom Charter, which they claim is theirs... The people shall govern, they say. And now?
"It is sad to see the efforts of Mandela sizzle... all going down the drain because of greedy people."
Yet another user, Theo Zentgraf, dismissed e-tolls as just another form of taxation for an already overtaxed society. "Furthermore, it is a way to control and know where people are moving... Not different to the pass laws of the past or the controls implemented in old Soviet Russia."
