Fin24 user Jaco van Niekerk gives his two cents regarding the e-tolls article entitled "It's unconstitutional not to govern wisely":
The people of South Africa pay their taxes every day. From the wealthy CEO at the very top of the food chain to the poorest-of-the-poor that is paying VAT when he/she is scurrying for a few extra cents to pay for a loaf of bread. Yet, taxes is a way of life ... it is one of those universal truths.
However, most of us do not really give much thought about how our tax money is spent.
Granted, we complain when we read about corruption, under-spending, parties and unreasonable upgrades to mansions. But, we never really do anything concrete about it.
Most importantly, we continue to pay our taxes. It is as if we have divorced the two concepts from one another - at least on a subconscious level.
E-tolls are different. It is not a mere PAYE or VAT line on your payslip or retail receipt. It is an in your-face gateway that whisks your money away every time you try to get to work to earn your daily bread and tax.
It is a blatant reminder of an ill-conceived system, which is a direct consequence of the corruption and incompetence of the government of the day. A government which seems to have lost its moral compass and its connection with those that it is suppose to serve.
There is substantial number of people that will not accept the e-toll system and this may just be the tipping point of a society that is growing increasingly fed up with an over-promising and under-delivering government.
