The late president Nelson Mandela signed and wrote a brief note in Afrikaans on a copy of his biography for Fin24 user Johan Duvenage. He writes:
I am a 53-year-old white Afrikaans speaking South African.
In 1995 just after the late Nelson Mandela took office, I bought his Long Walk to Freedom book.
I knew someone in his office and asked this person if she would not mind asking him to autograph the book for me.
He did that and wrote me a note on the front page in my mother tongue of Afrikaans. If translated it says: "To Johannes J Duvenage, complements and best wishes to a good and progressive South African" signed "Mandela 3.4.95".
It is written in black ink and what is impressive is that he took time out to do that with such detail. Most people spell my surname with an "h" - he made sure that it was spelt correctly.
